Research Notes
October 15, 2008 After reviewing again the birth record for Christina Ory, daughter of Francois Ory and "Anna Marie Perchi", I've come to the conclusion that the correct last name is actually "Berchi". "Anna" came from Francois Ory's last will and testement, but it is not stated on Christina's birth record. Christina Ory is one of the children that came to America in 1736 with Francois Ory.
October 24, 2008 I began to go over the many copies of events that I had from earlier years of research and finding that there were events that I had written down incorrectly, or rather did not read/translate correctly. Handwriting in the 1700s and 1800s and in various languages and with various styles was quite difficult for me just starting genealogy research. And is some cases the same name was written differently. One that comes to mind, besides "Ory", is the surname "Flach". Looking at dozens of records with this name the most popular spelling has been "Flach", yet in a few cases the name appears to be "Fluck". Now I went to a grade school with a classmate whos name was "Fluck", hence my confusion. So, I've gone back into my database and changed the names to the most common spelling. And in doing so, also added more data that I had skipped over in the event records due to not understanding the lineage.
On the same note, the surname "Patt" that I previously had translated, is in reality "Batt". Again, I needed to look at several records, penned by the same person to determine the correct spelling. Back to the database for those corrections.

October 26, 2008 I found the copy of a record that is responsible for finding the locations of our Ory ancestors. The following is the written event of the baptism of Francois Nicolas Ory, son of Francois Sebastien Ory and Josephine Dorr from S.S. Peter and Paul Church in Naperville, DuPage, IL from the 1860s. It is written in Latin and the priest, knowing that one of the parents had come from a certain area, included both parents from the same place.
So, the translation of the record is as follows: I baptize Francois Nicolas, son of Francois Sebastien Ory (spelled ORI) from Frisenheim in Alsace and Josephine Dorr (spelled DOER), from the same place. Sponsors ('sponsors' not written): Nicolas Lark and Louise Rheinwald.
I knew Francois Sebastien was not from Friesenheim. But, I did have a hunch Josephine must have been. I went back to records for Friesenheim, located records for Josephine, and came across a marriage record for Rosalie Ory, which stated she was from Russ, Bas-Rhin, France. Then I viewed records from Russ, and there was Francois Sebastien Ory and numerous generations of our Ory ancestors. This was a stroke of luck and had it not been for my father getting permission from the parish to pour through their records, we may still be searching for our ancestral beginnings. |

November 5, 2008 I have come to the conclusion that there are two Dominique Orys in the region of La Broque. The Dominique Ory of my lineage is married to Anna Gourneau. The other Dominique Olry or Oulric is the son of Sebastien Oulric and is married to Jeanne Maison. Because the marriage years lined up for both wives to one Dominique, I made it a theory until proven otherwise. Current research points to two separate Dominiques. |
