Research Notes
June 12, 2004 The good news is that I've found the record of death for a Dominique Ory of Saulxuress. ( I believe Horace Ory sent me the copies from the Saulxures film he researched.) Unfortunately it is not the death record for the father of Francois Ory. I'll go out on a limb here and theorize that Dominique Ory of Saulxures is possibly the brother of Francois Ory, both sons of Dominique Ory (our oldest found ancestor). [See P.S. below.] There are a few items that lead me to believe this theory. One, Francois, Dominique, and Nicolas are all well educated; being witnesses in many events; being able to write and read, being involved in education. Two, Francois and Dominique have signatures that are ended with a flourish. I usually have only seen that type of signature with registrars, usually priests.
Other facts I've found are: Olry and Ory are the same name. Registrars have written both names on different events, even though they were writing about the same person. I can't remember seeing any Ory actually sign his or her name with the letter 'L' in it. Dominique Ory (the oldest one, father of Francois) is dead before or at 1717. Dominique Ory of Saulxures died in 1734. He married Magdeline Cauquelin in 1732 and died in 1734. Dominique Ory of La Broque married twice, Anna Gourneau and Jeanne Maison; children from both marriages are sequential in years. So, Dominique Ory of Saulxures died abt 17 years after Dominique Ory of La Broque, which also leads me to believe they are father and son. Another interesting find is on Leopold Ory's marriage record from Plaine, Dominique Ory of Saulxures, a Nicolas Ory, and Francois Ory, son of the eldest Dominique Ory and from the La Broque area are all witnesses. This indicates that they are all of the same family.
Finding the birth records of all these people would clear up a lot of questions. Where to look? I think that they all are living and staying in the same valley of the Vosges mountains of this period, late 1600s and early 1700s. Distances between Saulxures and Plaine and La Broque are easily traveled in a day, which accounts for them being witnesses to family events. The records must be in the valley parishes.
P.S. After corresponding with Horace Ory, Dominique Ory of Saulxures is the son of Nicolas Ory of Saulxures, not the son of Dominique Ory of La Broque.

June 19, 2004 After reviewing a FHL film and researching on the Internet, a death record for Sebastienne Colas Mougin, widow of Pierre Oulric (Ory) from 1688 in the parish of Vipucelle-La Broque, it was found to have been witnessed by Dominique Oulric (Ory), son of Sebastien and by Jacob Federic, son-in-law of Sebastienne. Jacob Federic is the husband of Catherine Ory, daughter of Pierre Oulric (Ory). Some assumptions are made here in that Pierre Ory is the brother of Dominique Ory and Sebastien is their father. Pierre Juillot’s web site in french posted Denis Leypold’s research work of the ancient parish of Vipucelle. The site is: http://juillot.home.cern.ch/juillot/noms_familles.html. A partial transcription of some of the records from Vipucelle is at: http://juillot.home.cern.ch/juillot/registre.html.
* * * August 8, 2004 Observations during the last month of research. Dimenge or Dimonge are other forms of Dominique. Jacob and Jacque are used interchangeably. Charpentier and Zimmermann are the French and German versions of this surname respectively. Bois du Jardin and Baumgartner are also the French and German versions of the same name. Also, just to confuse researchers, Patt and Batt are interchangeable because they sound almost the same when spoken and registrars used both spellings as they saw fit. More and more often, I've found registrars writing the wrong names or changing the names for event records. Below are event records for the same couple: * birth/baptism record-1741 for Pierre, son of Francois Aury & Elizabeth Bois de Jardin * birth/baptism record-1743 for Jean Francois, son of Francois Avril & Elizabeth Bois de Jardin * birth/baptism record-1745 for Marguerite, daughter of Francois Avril & Elizabeth Baumgartner
